For the evening skin care routine I rely on the double cleanse method. This means that you use oil to clean your face and it has literally revolutionised my skin care. Keep in mind that you don’t have to do this directly before going to bed, but just after the sun has gone down, which means you don’t need UV protection any longer.
The idea is that dirt and pollution are attached to the natural oils on your skin. Makeup also is made up of oils. Oils are able to break open other oils and get attached to them. So if you use an oil cleanser – no matter how oily your skin gets – it will naturally cleanse your skin way better than any other product could.
To do this you apply the cleansing oil to your hands, rub it and then massage it into your dry skin. Once it is applied, you add a little water to your palms and massage that into your face as well. The oil will emulsify and become white and creamy. After that you can just wash the product off and your skin will be makeup and grime free. To get the last of the oily product off your skin, you can now use a gentle cleanser – this cleanser should be targeted to your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, normal, mixed). Afterwards moisturise with a night cream.
A night cream should be richer than a day creme, as your skin regenerates over night and can use any help you can give it. Consider using something with hyaluronic acid (hydration) or Retinol (anti-aging) in it. As it is used in the evening you don’t need UV protection – I’ve seen night creams with it and it’s a waste of ingredients. Let the product absorb into your skin.
Optional: If you’ve been taking off makeup you can add a rosewater toner after the cleanser. Toners equalise the PH level of your skin and prepares it for the next step, but it is not necessary.

Extra tip: Buy washable cotton swabs. After using them, I rub them clean with some hand soap and throw them in the washing basket. This way they stay nice and white and you minimise your imprint on the planet – piece by piece.
