Hair water or micellaire water for your scalp is an age old product that has been used against dandruff, sensitive scalp skin, oily scalp and also hair loss (mostly by men). The original is an infusion of nettle or birch that effectively neutralises the ph levels of your scalp. You can buy a version of this by Garnier but the problem with this product and many others is that they include alcohol.

I follow the curly girl method – a hair care routine that requires you to skip all harmful chemicals from your shampoo, conditioner and other hair care products. Alcohol is one of those products, so you can imagine how difficult it is to find good products. I came across the concept of hair water because I realised that getting beautiful, healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp – because, you know, that’s where your hair comes from (duh). Your scalp is actually just an extension of the skin on your face and just as sensitive.
So I went to search for an alternative. I live in the Netherlands and a big drugstore here is the Kruidvat. They have their own products but also sell other brands. They also had a hair water in their own line, the Kruidvat Haarlotion Klitwortel – it was a pity that this also had alcohol in it. What I did find quite interesting is, that they added salicylic acid to it: this is also quite an aggressive ingredient but one that helps the skin to shed more quickly. So new, young, healthy skin can replace it. Products with salicylic acid have to be used carefully by those with sensitive skin, because they are very drying. But if you have a lot of issues with dandruff, I would try this lotion uit.
Ingredients: Aqua, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Resorcinol, arctium lappa extract, salicylic acid, tetrasodium EDTA, PArfum, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, sodium nezoate, potassium sorbate, sodium hydrocide, CI 19140, CI 16255
My following thought process was that the “cleanest” products are usually the ones for babies. And indeed, I did find a hair water for babies from Zwitsal but surprisingly this also contained alcohol! I found this quite disappointing in such a huge company that produces products for babies… but there you go.
Ingredients: Aqua, Alcohol Denat., PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Parfum, Tocopheryl Acetate.
So I went back to good old Kruidvat, who also have baby products in their own line and voila: A baby hair lotion/hair water without alcohol (also free of colouring, soap and ph-neutral) and relatively cheap!
Ingredients: Aqua, Glycerin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, citric acid, tocopherol.
The hair water/hairlotion has the typical powdery smell of baby products and is runny like water (so not a gel consistency!). Because it is so runny, I pour it into it’s own lid, which you can easily screw open (less than half of the lid is enough). Then I wet my fingertips with the water and massage it into my scalp. It gives a very refreshing feeling. Take care to only use your fingertips and not your nails, which would scratch the skin on your scalp.
Head massages are very relaxing, good for blood circulation and because of that also a good tip if you want to grow your hair long. The hair lotion promises to also tame the hair, which I doubt. But as I don’t use any hair styling products, so it won’t harm to try it out.
I will give a review of this product after using it for a while and seeing the results.
UPDATE: As I mentioned the products does nothing for styling your hair, as it does not give any hold. I did not feel any difference in my hair after using this and will not repurchase it. Quite a pity, but there you go.
